Lake Baikal, Cape Burkhan. E-cards
Cape Burkhan is situated in the central part of the western coast of Baikal's largest island - Olkhon, within the territory of the Pribaikalsky National Park, near the settlement of Khuzhir. This wonderful natural creation has many names: Cape Pesherny ("peshera" in Russian means grotto or cave), Cape Shaman, Shaman Rock, Cape Burkhan.
The two rocks of Burkhan, connected by a depression, have become overgrown with bright rusty-red lichen, contrasting magnificently with the white marble of the rock. Over thousands of years, water and wind have carved a cave through the Burkhan rocks, that bears the name of Shaman Cave. According to ancient legend, this is where the lord of Olkhon dwelt. The lord of Olkhon was the most formidable and most revered god of Baikal. Cape Burkhan and the cave were considered sacred by the ancient inhabitants of the island.
