Lake Baikal, Round-Baikal Railway. E-cards
The Round-Baikal Railroad is an operating historical monument to engineering. The Round-Baikal Railroad is situated along the south-western shore of Lake Baikal, joining the Sliudyanka and Port Baikal railway stations. Before the river Angara was blocked by the Irkutsk Hydro-electric dam (HEPP), the railway ran further from Port Baikal along the banks of the Angara to Irkutsk. Today, the Old Round-Baikal Railroad is 85 kilometres long.
The most beautiful time on the Round-Baikal Railroad is in the autumn when the crimson-yellow-green forests become still, as if locked in apprehension of the coming fall, and the magnificent blue of Baikal is churned up by unruly waves, carrying white horses towards the shores. There are not many tourists at this time and no one hinders one from enjoying the quiet, the stillness, the freshness of the air and some kind of invisible mystery that permeates everything around.
